In 2014, the series was first announced by Netflix and Scholastic Media, and was titled The Magic Schoolhouse Omnibus 360°.[ten] The new iteration of the franchise features a modernized "Ms. Frizzle" (replacing Valerie with her younger sis Fiona) and a high-tech coach that stresses modern inventions such as robotics, wearables and camera technology. The hope is to captivate children'south imaginations and motivate their interest in the sciences.[11] It was produced by 9 Story Media Group.[12] Producer Stuart Stone, who voiced Ralphie in the original series, stated that The Magic Schoolhouse Bus 360° volition feature some of the original voice actors in unlike roles. The testify'south phonation cast is based in Los Angeles, California, United states and Toronto, Ontario, Canada with Susan Blu as the Los Angeles vocalism managing director and Alyson Courtroom every bit the Toronto vocalisation manager.[13] In February 2017, Kate McKinnon was cast in the role of Ms. Frizzle (without clarifying it was Fiona, the younger sis of Valerie, now Professor Frizzle, still voiced past Tomlin). The series then inverse its name to The Magic School Bus Rides Again.[14] The series was released on Netflix on September 29, 2017.[1] The 2nd season was released on April 13, 2018.[ii]
Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton sings the theme vocal.[xv] Phoebe Terese, a character from the original serial, is replaced by a new student named Jyoti, as information technology was revealed that Phoebe transferred back to her quondam school.[16] [17] The episode endings feature question and respond sessions with Professor Frizzle, echoing the segments about viewers calling the producer which accompanied the original series on commercial-gratuitous channels.[18] Despite clarifying some artistic license taken in the episode, these scenes are still gear up in a universe with magical vehicles.[nineteen] Amongst other changes, the students however wear the same clothes every day but they practise not resemble those from the original series.[20] Three 45–minute specials were released in 2020: the starting time special The Magic School Passenger vehicle Rides Again: Kids in Space was released on August 7,[21] the second named The Magic School Motorcoach Rides Once again: The Frizz Connection on October 20[22] and a tertiary titled The Magic School Bus Rides Again: In the Zone on Dec 26.[23] The artstyle was changed for the specials equally the characters have no outlines and the lighting and shading are more detailed.
Critical reception [edit]
Why has this adept-natured bear witness already received an inordinate amount of judgement? How can this much vitriol be thrown at a cosmos earlier anyone has even seen it?
—Decider, [24]
After the serial' declaration and the release of its trailer, there was initial resistance to the new art style, absence of Lily Tomlin as Ms. Frizzle, and fearfulness information technology would not live upwardly to the original series.[25] [26] AOL accused the show of giving Ms. Frizzle a nose job.[27] Bustle put this downwardly to fans of the show being "protective of its legacy".[28]
Despite this speculation, the series has been critically acclaimed upon release. Common Sense Media deemed the show a worthy successor to its 1990s sister series, praising its gender and ethnic diverseness and its commitment to education children about STEM subjects.[29] Christianity Today argues that the show managed to keep the "genius of the franchise", which is that the children are almost more intrigued by the complexity and gild of the natural world rather than the magic of the titular school motorbus.[xxx] Daily Dot praised the serial' premiere for addressing the change to the show'due south structure, putting viewers at ease through the transition, adding that the science was made "approachable".[26] The Houstonian found the episodes' scenarios to exist "pretty interesting", commenting on the academical and moral lessons.[31] The AV Club felt the series lives upward to its predecessor, and contains the aforementioned "goofy humor and ease with making learning fun".[32] Another AV Society commodity wrote that the serial is "lively, fast-paced, and exceedingly tolerable for adults", and total of enough science to allow them to park their kids in front end of it guilt-free.[33]
